Music Video for Black Swan

I made a (very) ambient video for a song from one of my favorite recent albums "In 8 Movements" by Black Swan.

Bald Eagle Weekend

Hard to tell in this photo - but while leaving Estes Park last weekend we drove by a reservior where we spotted this bald eagle. We parked near the water and the eagle flew around the lake and over our car. It was a pretty magnificent sight (pictured above - but not with enough detail to determine it is a bald eagle in the photo). That's it - I promise. Photo by Lorna.

A couple of small works

I've been making lots of small studies and experiments lately - including this pastel study of a Scottish landscape done as a demo for drawing class and a small acrylic painting (4x6") of a coyote. The black background behind the coyote reflected in the photo quite a bit but you get the idea:

UPDATE: This little guy was posted on the well known tumblr blog This Isn't Happiness yesterday!

What does your art entail?

"Drift" installation view

"Drift" installation view, originally uploaded by nathanabels.

Inspired by "Urban Tundra"

I exhibited the above painting "Urban Tundra" at the Stark show at Foothills Art Center last year - while it was there some class groups came through and wrote about different works in the show. One nine year old student by the name of Roxi wrote a really touching story about this painting;

During the winter in the school year my mother sends me to school with two warm biscuits and half an apple. When I'm walking to school sometimes I will stop walking and eating to close my eyes and listen to the trains pass by and the mills working away. I can smell and almost taste the smoke in the air. I can feel the snow crystals piercing my skin. I wonder if I can see Papa working at the mills. I wonder when Papa will have a vacation to spend time with Mama, my little sister Mary, and I. When my Papa will say "Tell me a story, Elanor." But Papa never gets vacations from work. Almost everyone's dad works at the mills. When I go home Papa is tired and won't talk to me. Mary is tired too. A few years later the mills shut down and father has more time with us. Father will finally say, "Tell me a story, Elanor." Now we can see the stars without the mills. Mary has gotten older and is going away for two days for a camp at the museum made out of the mills. I could never forget what they looked like when the mills were still running. I have this feeling that the mills will open up again.

Recommended Studio Music: Black Swan (not the movie)

I've been listening to "Music in 8 Movements" a whole lot lately. Experimedia describes it this way;

"Black Swan emerges from the shadowy billows of smoke to immerse listeners in a lucid, cavernous dream, tracing silhouettes in the darkness with drowning ambience and orchestrated drones that screech and howl intermittently amongst the disorienting magnetic tape disturbances. Black Swan operates under a guise of far-away sounds traveling through murky waters, drowning the listener in its heavy-handed layers of ghostly resonance."
It really is exceptional.

The week(end)

I stopped by the new Native American galleries at the Denver Art Museum on Friday - fantastic updates/exhibitions including the above print by Edward Curtis.

Saw three live music shows this week - the best by far was a mesmerizing, intense set by Wovenhand. Photo from the show (above) by Peter Hyde.

Spent Sunday afternoon at the Tarryall Reservoir amongst rock formations and ice.

Hang Son Doong Cave, Vietnam

Whoa. That's real. Hang Son Doong Cave, Vietnam - A half-mile block of 40-story buildings could fit inside this lit stretch of Hang Son Doong, which may be the world’s biggest subterranean passage. source.

Music for Your Studio: Jon Lemmon, "Kindling EP"

Jon emailed me about his new ep a few days ago describing it as, "mostly inspired by feelings of detachment and social isolation related to growing up in suburban los angeles and constantly staring at a computer screen." It's a free download - give it a listen.
